About artist Kristin Gibson Kristin Gibson graduated from ECU School of Art in 1990 with a BFA in Painting and Textiles. Kristin’s career began in textiles, designing fabric collections, which continues to inform her strong sense of color and composition. Her ties to Greensboro include designing for both Culp and HealthTex. After a lifetime living and painting by the sea, a recent move and life change finds her contemplating new canvases, with walks in Duke Gardens, Umstead State Park, and also the Durham Farmer’s Market. An alla prima painter, Kristin’s confident brushwork and unique perspectives in her still life subjects capture the eye of collectors. These words from an admirer are more than she could hope for someone to find in her paintings: “Kristin's work has organic unity and a cohesive palette that yields many delights in a narrow range of colors. Her painting also does not give up all its secrets in the first look, it makes you wonder, also makes you think, ‘wonder why I never saw such beauty in a simple arrangement of objects before?"
Artist Statement. A bit of the how and why I pick up a brush each day! Finding perpetual inspiration in organic shapes and hues of fruits, flowers, vegetables and the sea, my works begin as drawings with my paintbrush. With bold immediacy and working entirely from day-to-day subjects, lines in a layer of paint jump-start a fluent process of color into color, paint into paint. Favorite aspects of a painting emerge as spontaneous composition and expressive brushwork that sings. These thick impasto marks offering hints and glimpses into my process. Truth is, I paint the way I cook – not afraid to mix a little of this, with a little of that. Mixing form and flavors, mixing colors, open to the unexpected and intuitive the subject and process brings forth. I learn something new each day! |
